Why Koh Samui
Thailand’s island that never needed to try this hard — and somehow got better anyway
Koh Samui has been drawing travellers for decades, and it has earned every bit of that reputation. The second largest island in Thailand sits in the Gulf of Thailand with a coastline that shifts between white sand beaches, dramatic rocky headlands, and mangrove-lined bays — backed throughout by jungle-covered hills that hide waterfalls, temples, and more coconut palms than you can reasonably count.
What separates Samui from other Thai islands is the range. You can spend a morning at a Michelin-recommended street stall, an afternoon in a five-star spa, and an evening watching fire dancers on Chaweng beach. The infrastructure is there, the luxury is real, and the Thai spirit underneath it all remains entirely intact.

What to Do
The Koh Samui You Came For
Beaches, temples, jungle, and everything the Gulf of Thailand has to offer
🏖️
Chaweng & Lamai Beaches
Chaweng is the island’s main beach — 7 kilometres of white sand with calm water, good food, and everything from beachside massage to rooftop bars. Lamai, just south, is quieter and arguably more beautiful. Both deliver exactly what the postcards suggest.
🛥️
Ang Thong Marine Park
A cluster of 42 islands 30 kilometres off the coast, protected as a national marine park. The emerald lake on Ko Mae Ko inspired Alex Garland’s novel The Beach. Kayaking through the limestone caves here is the best day trip available from Samui — by some margin.
🛕
Big Buddha & Wat Plai Laem
The 12-metre golden Big Buddha at Koh Fan is visible from across the water. Wat Plai Laem, a few minutes away, has a multi-armed deity over a lotus pond that is one of the more visually striking temple complexes in southern Thailand. Both are worth your morning.
🌿
Na Muang & Secret Falls
Two waterfalls in the jungle interior of the island — Na Muang 1 is easily accessible and dramatic; Na Muang 2 requires a 40-minute hike through the forest and rewards you with a pool that has no tourists in it. Get there early.
🍜
Fisherman’s Village, Bophut
The northern coast’s most charming stretch — a row of Chinese shophouses converted into restaurants, galleries and boutiques, fronting a beach with long-tail boats. The Friday night walking market is the best evening on the island. Bring an appetite.
🧘
Wellness & Thai Spa Culture
Koh Samui has one of the highest concentrations of detox retreats, Muay Thai camps, and genuine traditional Thai massage parlours anywhere in the world. Whether you want a full wellness reset or just two hours on a massage table, the island is comprehensively equipped.

“The Thai spirit underneath it all remains entirely intact — regardless of how good the infinity pool gets.”

🧘
The Wellness Seeker
World-class detox retreats, sunrise yoga on the beach, Muay Thai training camps, and traditional Thai healing massage. Samui is one of the most established wellness destinations in southeast Asia.
👨👩👧👦
Family Holiday
Calm waters on the northern and eastern coasts, an elephant sanctuary with ethical credentials, the Big Buddha, and resorts with dedicated kids’ facilities. Samui works exceptionally well for families with young children.

Where to Stay
The Right Base Changes Everything
Koh Samui’s coastline is long enough that where you stay shapes the entire trip. The northern coast around Bophut and Maenam is quieter, more local, and better for families. Chaweng puts you at the centre of everything. The southern coast is where the serious luxury sits — private villas tucked into hillsides with their own pools and sea views.
The island has a full range from boutique beachfront guesthouses to some of Thailand’s finest resort properties. Getting the match right between your expectations and the property is exactly what we do.
Private pool villas on the southern headlands
Boutique resorts in Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village
Full-service beach resorts on Chaweng and Lamai
Wellness retreats with integrated spa programmes
Family-friendly resorts with shallow lagoon pools
When to Go
The Best Time to Visit Koh Samui
The short version: January to April. The full picture is below.
| Season | Temperature | What to Expect | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan – April | 28–32°C | The Gulf of Thailand is at its calmest. Clear skies, ideal water visibility, and the best conditions for Ang Thong Marine Park day trips. Peak season with peak prices. | Best Time |
| May – Sept | 28–33°C | Warmer and wetter on the west coast but the Gulf side stays largely dry. Fewer crowds and significantly lower resort rates make this a genuine insider window. | Value Season |
| Oct – Dec | 25–30°C | The island’s wettest months, particularly October and November. The jungle is at its most vivid green and waterfalls are running at full strength. Avoid if beach time is the priority. | Green Season |
